As a member of her school choir Marijke Groenendaal was often asked to sing the solo parts.
Since she was eighteen years old, she has had private lessons; taking lessons with her present vocal coach, Marjan Kuiper, has greatly advanced Marijke's singing career, starting with a performance in the Dutch television classical singing contest "Una Voce Particolare" in 2005. In November 2005 and July 2007 Marijke attended masterclasses with Evelyn Tubb.
In July 2007, she attended the Dartington International Summer School, where she sang some solo parts in the Chamber Choir contribution to the final concert (Handel's Coronation Anthems), directed by Steven Devine and Jonathan Tilbrook.
In 2008 and 2011, Marijke joined the AIMS International Music School, where she received lessons in vocal technique from Robert Dean and Jacqueline Figelle, and took masterclasses with, among others, Richard Jackson, Penelope MacKay, Ameral Gunson, John Ramster, Theresa Goble, Eugene Asti and Peter Knapp. After taking part in auditions for named opera parts in 2008, Marijke was given the part of Leonora in a performance of a section of Beethoven's "Fidelio", directed by Kate Brown and Neil Jenkins. in 2011 she was selected to take part in the Celebrity Masterclass from Sarah Walker, and she was one of the soloists in "King David" by Honegger. With Coen Honig she was selected for the Tutor's Choice concert in 2011, where they sang a duet from "Oratorio de Noël" by Saint-Saëns.
A successful partnership with pianist Jacob Engel, which begun in 2006, has resulted in a number of Art Song recitals in The Netherlands, a performance in two of the student concerts in AIMS International Music School, and the recordal of a CD in 2009.
In addition to these recitals Marijke regularly performs as a soloist in choir concerts and in small ensembles. Please refer to the concert list for more details on past and future concerts. The page "Repertoire" gives an impression of the wide variety of music Marijke can offer. You can also hear some recordings of live performances over the past years.
Although most of Marijke's musical activities take place in The Netherlands, she has several contacts in England. In October 2010 she sang as a soloist in an Autumn concert conducted by Neil Jenkins. In July 2011 she sang several solo parts in the 90th anniversary concert of the Sussex Chorus in Brighton Dome, again conducted by Neil Jenkins, alongside Dame Felicity Lott (duet in Mendelssohn's "Hymn of Praise") and Carol Rowlands ("Flower duet").
